Welcome, Naya! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello! I’m Naya Hromic, a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill from New York City. I’m currently studying at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media with a focus in Advertising and Public Relations. In my free time, you can find me hanging out with my roommates and our pets (a service dog in training and a rescue cat), scrapbooking, playing guitar, or going for a run around Chapel Hill’s beautiful campus.
We have a history of creative PR interns due to a shared passion and dedication to public relations. What drove your interest in PR?
Ironically, I didn’t start out as a PR major, nor did I start out at the University of North Carolina. I transferred from the University of Vermont, where I was a psychology major. I had always known that I wanted to work in a people-first industry, but I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what that would look like. I was on the right track with psychology, but I soon realized my strengths lay in creative strategy. I chose PR because I believe it is a field where you can explore so many dimensions of communication, develop valuable people skills, and employ your creativity in research, messaging, and campaign development.
What do you hope to learn in your time with Evergreen & Oak?
During my time with Evergreen & Oak, I hope to deepen my understanding of PR best practices and professionalism while continuing to develop my communication skills. I’m particularly excited to strengthen my client-facing communication, learn how to navigate client relationships, and gain a better understanding of what it takes to deliver thoughtful, effective communications in an agency setting.
Who/what has inspired you during your university career?
My friends and peers have been my greatest source of inspiration. I will always say that coming to UNC exposed me to the ambition and drive of young professionals, which has motivated me to raise my own standards and pursue opportunities that challenge me. Being surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do has encouraged me to aim higher, step outside my comfort zone, and make the most of my university experience.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned during a previous internship?
My previous internships have taught me the importance of intentionality and framing. Most of my past experience has been in sales and marketing, where I set out each day with the goal of promoting a product. Along the way, I encountered questions, skepticism, and commentary from prospective consumers. These experiences taught me to listen intentionally, anticipate questions before they arise, address concerns proactively, and frame a product in a way that connects with what matters most to the consumer.
On the fun side, what TV show or movie character would be the most fun to change places with for a week? Why?
I would trade places with Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. Her determination to achieve her goals despite other people’s skepticism inspires me. I especially admire how she challenges the assumptions surrounding educated women, proving that you don’t have to sacrifice your personality to be successful or taken seriously.
Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?
Although it’s quite the commitment to get there from New York, my next bucket-list destination is Australia. I’ve never been to the Eastern Hemisphere, and with my passion for exploring new places and experiencing different cultures, I would love the opportunity to see what Australia has to offer. Between its beautiful coastlines and unique wildlife, it feels like it’d be the kind of trip you talk about forever.
