How did you get your start in journalism? Specifically in reporting on the cannabis and technology industry?
I’ve been working in the cannabis and technology space for seven years. As a young writer, I was searching for a niche that wasn’t oversaturated. It was a great time to enter the cannabis sector and lend my expertise to the community. The industry has grown and evolved so much in the years since — it’s been fascinating to see the transformation. The most rewarding aspect is educating people who have misconceptions about the plant from years of strategic government misinformation.
How can companies thoughtfully respond to trending stories to help make an impact on your readers?
Our motto at Innovative Properties Worldwide has always been “Inform, Inspire, and Entertain.” I think if a company can check off one or all of those points, they’re adding value to the conversation.
What makes a story pitch compelling/appealing to you?
Most importantly, the pitch should fit the publication’s theme. I look for stories that center around innovative technologies that are making an impact for cannabis professionals and consumers. It never hurts to have an exciting tie-in with a celebrity or influencer.
What cannabis-related technology products or developments are you most excited about or want to learn more about?
I love to see exciting developments in consumer technology. Cannabis & Tech Today is largely a B2B publication, but we also cater to high-end consumers. This niche audience gives me access to cutting-edge consumption tech and I think the more accessible and clean we make the consumption experience, the easier it is for people to find a modality that fits their lifestyle.
What trends or policies do you think will have the greatest impact on shaping the industry in the next 1-2 years?
Rescheduling cannabis will have a massive impact on the industry. Many retailers are operating on razor-thin margins due to state and federal tax laws. Rescheduling would change their tax burden and allow them to actually make a profit, expand operations, and afford to compete with larger multi-state operators. More so, decreasing the tax burden creates room for innovation and creativity in the industry, which is always positive for customers.
Are there specific topics/themes you haven’t covered yet that you would like to get more perspective on?
I love learning about innovative sustainability initiatives. Though sustainable development is one of our publication’s central themes, there’s always more to know and discover. The world is undergoing a resource crisis and there’s an urgent need for cultivators, processors, and retailers to find creative solutions to lessen the industry’s impact.
What is one of the most memorable or favorite stories you’ve covered so far in your career?
Speaking with some of my idols, like Carlos Santana and Tommy Chong, has been wildly rewarding. However, I think the most fulfilling stories are those that bring critical knowledge to our readers. I recently wrote about the dangers of inhaling pyrolyzed pesticides. There’s a startling lack of research on how pesticides affect the human body when ignited and ingested. These stories are shaping the future of the industry and I find that absolutely thrilling.
